Travel AR
Discovering cities and attractions around the globe with AR

With TravelAR, my team sought to conceptualize a unique way that XR could be used to enable users to experience new areas of the world. With this MR concept, users can explore the streets of key travel destinations, absorbing culture and collecting tokens alongside friends.
This concept was presented throughout the Accenture XR practice as an example of possible client use cases.

Identifying the Gap
The Existing Landscape
We conducted a competitive analysis to gain an understanding of the existing landscape of travel focused XR experiences.
We found that the majority of these applications utilized stationary 360 cameras and typically focused on singular attractions (eg. Antarctic penguin habitats or the Grand Canyon). Although these experiences were informative for users, they were limited in exploration and location quantity, making them minimally used applications.
The Opportunity
We sought to create a application that would highlight the following key priorities:
Ample Cultural Knowledge
Free Range Exploration
Memory Capturing
Social Capabilities
Gamification and Rewards
Building the Concept
Choosing a Destination
On the home screen, users are able to navigate through destination cards that include culturally relevant graphics and text to give a sense of what to expect.
Also from the home screen, users are able to view a list of their friends, photos they've taken on their trips, and access settings (where they can customize their avatar, Toto, and much more).
Once a destination is selected, users are shown a mini map of their destination where they can select their drop point.
Exploring a Destination
Toto serves as your personal travel companion and guide throughout the city. He can give recommendations on key spots to visit, share cultural knowledge, help you in your experience with tutorials and more. He is always accessible, whether users would like to free roam around the map or have a more guided experience.
As users explore, they come across a collection of info popups at various attractions, restaurants, shops, and more. There are also culturally relevant objects scattered throughout the maps that users can collect and store in their travel journal, alongside photos and cultural facts. The core purpose of the travel journal is to give users a sense of progression and reward as they explore each destination, boosting retention.
Final Demo
This video captures the full TravelAR concept and was demoed throughout the XR practice as well as client groups.
